Privacy

This page describes what MathBuddy currently does, as implemented. It is not a legal privacy policy and makes no compliance claims.

If you are an adult evaluating MathBuddy: please do not enter a real student's name, contact details, or school information, and do not upload a photo containing a real student's name or face. See For Educators for evaluation guidance.

Text input

A question you type is sent to MathBuddy's backend server, then forwarded through OpenRouter to an Anthropic Claude model to generate a response. The first 100 characters of the question and the first 100 characters of the response are stored in MathBuddy's database, along with the grade, language, and a browser identifier (see below). The full question and response text are not separately stored by MathBuddy beyond this truncated record.

Photo input

An uploaded homework photo is sent from your browser to MathBuddy's backend server, then forwarded through OpenRouter to an Anthropic Claude model to generate a response. The image itself is not saved to disk or database by MathBuddy — it is processed for that one request and discarded. The photo's original filename is stored (truncated to 100 characters) as the record of that request, so avoid a filename that identifies a student.

Voice input

Voice input (the microphone button) is currently unavailable — it has been turned off while we review it for a production-grade speech-recognition provider. No audio is captured or sent anywhere by MathBuddy at this time. Re-enabling voice input will get a separate privacy review before it goes back live.

Read-aloud (text-to-speech)

The "Speak" button uses your browser's own built-in speech synthesis feature to read a response aloud. MathBuddy does not call a separate text-to-speech API for this. We have not verified how your specific browser or operating system implements its speech synthesis feature, and make no claim about whether that feature involves a network request on its end.

Browser identifier

MathBuddy stores a randomly generated identifier in your browser's local storage to recognize a returning browser across sessions. It is not linked to a name, email, or account, and is specific to one browser on one device — clearing your browser's site data resets it.

Stored session data

MathBuddy's database records, per interaction: grade level, language, input type (text/photo/voice), the truncated preview described above, the browser identifier, a coarse session-source category (e.g., developer testing vs. external use), and a timestamp. It does not knowingly store a student's name, contact information, or school unless someone types that information into a question — which evaluators are asked not to do.

Third-party AI providers

Text and photo requests are routed through OpenRouter to Anthropic's Claude models (Claude Haiku for text, Claude Sonnet for photos). Per OpenRouter's published documentation, its default behavior is to not retain prompt or response content — only request metadata such as timestamps, model used, and token counts — unless an account has opted into prompt logging, routes to a model/provider that trains on inputs, or has not enabled OpenRouter's Zero Data Retention controls. We have not verified which of those account-level settings are in effect for this deployment.

Do not rely on this page for a claim about how long any provider retains your data.

Access and server logs

The web server in front of MathBuddy logs standard request information for every request, including the visiting IP address, to help diagnose problems and keep the service running. These logs are kept for a bounded but not fixed period (rotated automatically by the server's logging system) and are not used for advertising or analytics.

Backups

MathBuddy's database is backed up automatically on a regular schedule and mirrored to a private cloud storage folder that is not publicly accessible. Backups contain the same stored session data described above (truncated previews, browser identifiers, session metadata), not full conversation text or images.

Retention

We do not currently operate a fixed automatic deletion schedule for stored session data or backups. Older backups are rotated out over time as described in our internal operations documentation, but this is a technical retention window, not a privacy-driven deletion guarantee.

Deletion

There is currently no self-service deletion tool. If you want a specific record removed (for example, feedback submitted by mistake), contact hello@aimathbuddy.online and we will do our best on a manual, best-effort basis — we have not yet operationally verified end-to-end deletion, so we cannot promise a specific outcome or timeline.
